HONESTLY
Words and Music By Billy Kay
You want to know where we stand
If I'm still your only man
You've drawn a line in the sand
It's time I let you know
I've never been in love this way
I feel it growing every day
So here's where I stand today
And...forever more
Honestly
You mean the world to me
I know where I want to be
Right here in your arms
You want to know how I feel
And if what we have is real
Honestly, it's strong as steel
And will last forever more
Whenever I'm alone with you
Your eyes say you feel it too
So let's make this dream come true
Forever more
Honestly
You mean the world to me
I know where I want to be
Right here in your arms
Honestly
I'm down on my bended knee
I want the whole world to see
My forever more

There's a part in every relationship where the woman tells the man "We've been dating a long time. It's time to either get serious... or move on"!
Most times, that's the guy's signal to flee!! In this song, rather then running, the guy thinks about it... and realizes he's head over heels in love! He tells her. He proposes. They live happily ever after. Awwww :)
I was driving on I-15 from San Diego back to Las Vegas. It's a long lonely stretch of desert highway. As we passed Barstow, I starting singing a song in my head. I thought to myself "Cool song. Which artist is that?" Then I realized it was just in my head. "I" was the artist!
I heard the whole song! The bass. The back-up vocals. Everything! It was like a song was playing on the radio - except in my head. By the time I got to the next town - Baker - the whole song was done. I asked at several fast food places and a gas station to borrow a pen to write down the lyrics. Apparently, pens are right up there with "Bathroom is for customers only".
So I couldn't write it down. And I couldn't record it - LOL. So I told myself if the song was truly memorable, I would still remember it the next day when I got home. Fortunately, it was memorable :)
Usually when I write, the song is just for me. It's not written for the masses. It's very personal. Very embarrassing. Incriminating! Then after I sit on it a while, I redo it so it relates to everyone.
Every line in this song actually happened to me. When I tried to re-write it for the masses, I couldn't change anything. Everything that happened to me, happens to everyone. Every feeling I tried to convey in the song was universal in reach.
Recording it was a blast! Songs generally build to a crescendo. I tried to see what it would be like to build a song "backwards". The first part of Honestly is the loud part... and then it gradually "de-crescendos" until you get to the sing-along chorus.
I retired from my real job in September, 2009. I submitted the song to The Las Vegas Weekly, and assumed I'd never hear back from them. Two weeks later I was at a mini-mart and picked up the paper. And there I was! The Number One downloaded song in Las Vegas! There are no words for what I felt that day. Better then hitting Megabucks! |
